England Is Trying to Impose a Tax on Disposable Cups

Members of one of the UK parliamentary committees believe that the introduction of a tax on disposable cups in the amount of 25 pence will significantly reduce environmental pollution by this type of packaging. The proceeds are planned to be used to develop the infrastructure of the waste recycling industry. Experts note that about 2.5 billion disposable cups are used annually in the country, of which only 0.25% is sent for recycling. In 2016, the Liberal Democratic Party has already initiated a 25p tax on disposable coffee cups. This idea was supported by environmental organizations and criticized by companies that produce paper cups. According to the latter, their packaging is subject to recycling and the introduction of an additional tax will only increase the cost of coffee, but will not improve the environmental situation. Earlier, Starbucks representatives said that in order to popularize reusable tableware, they will introduce a 5-pence tax on drinks taken out of coffee houses in disposable glasses. In addition, today at British Starbucks coffee shops, all customers bringing their own mugs receive a 5p discount on takeaway coffee.
